What F1, F1B and F2 mean in a cavoodle listing
The generation code tells you how much poodle is in the cross, which is a useful clue to how the coat is likely to turn out.
A cavoodle is a cavalier king charles spaniel crossed with a poodle. An F1 is the first generation, bred from two purebred parents: one cavalier and one poodle. Breed club guidance for poodle crosses uses the same codes: an F1B comes from breeding an F1 back to a poodle, so the puppy carries more poodle, and an F2 comes from breeding an F1 with another cross, most simply two F1s.
More poodle tends to mean a curlier coat. The Cockapoo Club of GB, a breed club for another poodle cross, says a cross bred back to a poodle is more likely to have a tight curly coat, that curlier coats are generally less likely to shed, and that every coat type needs regular grooming to stop it matting, with the most poodle-like coats also needing clipping and trimming.
None of this is a guarantee. Coats can differ between puppies in the same litter, and the American Kennel Club says no dog, purebred or mixed, is truly hypoallergenic, and that crossing a dog with a poodle does not make it non-shedding. Ask which generation the litter is, ask to see both parents, and ask how the coats of earlier litters turned out.
Cavoodles are bred from different sizes of poodle, and the toy poodle is the smallest of them. In a Royal Veterinary College study of UK dogs, almost half of the cavapoos (the same cavalier and poodle cross) had a toy poodle parent. If adult size matters for your home, ask which poodle variety was used rather than going by the puppy's current weight.

What health testing should a cavoodle breeder have done?
Ask for the results for both parents and ask to see the certificates. For breeding cavaliers, the UK's Royal Kennel Club recommends at a minimum heart screening for mitral valve disease and DNA tests for curly coat and dry eye syndrome and for episodic falling, plus eye testing as best practice. For toy and miniature poodles its lists include a DNA test for progressive retinal atrophy (prcd-PRA) and eye and hip testing.
