What WA law requires from a seller
In Western Australia, a dog must be microchipped by the time it is 3 months old and, whatever its age, before it is transferred to a new owner.
When a dog is transferred to a new owner, its details must be updated with a prescribed microchip database company within 7 days. HomeSafeID stopped being a prescribed database on 23 July 2025, and microchips registered only with it no longer show as registered.
Microchipping does not register a dog with the local government: owners must still register their dog with their council.
Since 26 May 2025, a pet shop needs a pet shop approval from its local government to sell puppies or dogs, and those dogs must come from a refuge organisation or dog management facility that holds a dog supply approval.
